Living on west 68th during med school was culturally rich for me too, although it was a couple of years after you lived there. Standing room was $10 at Carnegie and there was alway a vacant seat down by the stage... The little clubs with big names and unknown (to me) talent seemed to be just a subway ride away. Standing in line, memorizing bug/drug combos on flash cards while I waited for free tickets was always worth the time. And there was Central Park and the free music concerts; the sticky summer heat soon forgotten.

Yeah, I even enjoyed some of the subway station musicians!

For a girl from a tiny town, this was culture!!
